What the desk in Muscat actually asks for

Three things decide whether you drive away: the card, the licence and the age on it. Only one of them is money. Pick the one you are unsure about.

A credit card in the main driver's name is the Omani norm

Across the Gulf the counter expects a physical credit card carried by the person whose name is on the rental agreement, and Oman is no exception. That is the combination that raises the fewest questions at handover. It is not a law and it is not universal, and plenty of the cars listed here place no hold at all, which removes the question entirely. What we will not do is tell you that a named supplier will take your particular card, because their card policy is their own and it can change between the day you book and the day you land.

  • Bring the card itself. A hold is placed on a card, not on a phone wallet token.
  • A card belonging to a partner, a parent or an employer is the one most often refused, because the name has to match the licence.
  • If your only card is a debit card, the reliable route is a rate that blocks nothing rather than a hopeful conversation at the desk.

Visitors and residents are asked for different things

This is the part of Omani car hire that catches people out far more often than money does. A visitor driving on a short stay normally needs an International Driving Permit alongside the home licence, and the permit is a translation booklet rather than a licence in its own right, so both documents travel together. A resident holding an Omani residence card is normally expected to drive on an Omani licence instead. GCC licences are commonly accepted as they are. None of this is a promise about your specific booking, so read the licence line printed with the car before you pay.

  • Get the International Driving Permit at home. It is issued by your own motoring authority and cannot be bought in Muscat.
  • Most terms ask for a licence held for one to two years, counted from the issue date on the card.
  • A paper counterpart or a digital licence app on its own is usually not enough at an Omani desk.

Commonly 21 to 25, and it depends on the class of car

There is no single minimum age that covers the whole Muscat market. The usual floor sits somewhere between 21 and 25, and the heavier or more expensive the car, the higher that floor tends to climb. Where a supplier accepts a younger driver there is often a young driver charge that is collected locally rather than shown in the online total, so ask for it as a daily figure and multiply it by the length of your trip before you compare two prices. Our control below deliberately does not filter on age, because the age rule is not in the live data we receive.

  • Ask for the young driver charge as a per day amount, not a total.
  • An additional driver has to meet the same age and licence conditions as the main driver.
  • Larger 4x4 groups, the ones you would want for the mountains, are the most likely to set a higher floor.

The hold is the solved problem in Muscat

35

of the first 100 cars

block nothing at all on your card

89

of the first 100 cars

hold 300 euro or less, and the heaviest hold in the whole window is 400 euro

61

of the first 100 cars

can be cancelled free of charge

9

of the first 100 cars

come with unlimited kilometres

Those four numbers point in one direction. A third of the live window blocks nothing whatsoever, and the single heaviest hold on the list is 400 euro, so the deposit in Muscat is not the thing that will cost you. The kilometre allowance is. Nine cars in a hundred carry unlimited kilometres, the thinnest proportion on any of our city lists, and the common cap is 200 kilometres a day. This is a city where an ordinary day out is long: the coast road toward Sur, the climb to Nizwa and back, a run out to Wadi Shab. A cheap car on a tight cap can finish the week dearer than a car that costs more per day and lets you drive.

So use the control below to clear the card question in a minute, then spend your attention where the money actually leaks.

Read the Muscat mileage limits page

Answer three things and see what is left standing

Pick the hold your card can carry and the count underneath is recalculated against the cars on offer for your dates. Be clear about what is doing the work here before you touch it. The deposit figure arrives with each car from the live feed and the filtering is plain arithmetic on it, so that number is real. The card and age rows are our notes on what is usual in Oman, they are not in the data, and the control deliberately does not pretend to filter on them.

What you will pay with
Driver age
Hold your card can carry

The ordinary assumption in Oman and the combination that causes the least friction at handover. Carry the physical card, embossed or printed with the same name as the licence and the booking. Nothing here is a guarantee that a given supplier will accept a given card, so the card line in the terms shown with the car is what the counter will work from.

Some suppliers serving Muscat accept one and some do not, and those that do often attach a condition such as a larger hold or a compulsory cover product. We cannot see a supplier's card policy at the moment you book, so we will not tell you yours will be taken. The dependable path with a debit card is a car that places no hold at all, which is the filter this page opens on.

Cards that cannot be pre authorised in the usual way, and cards in somebody else's name, are the ones most often turned away at a Gulf desk. Plan around that rather than hoping: either book a zero deposit rate, or put the cardholder on the booking as the main driver.

Commonly accepted in Muscat on smaller cars, often with a young driver charge collected locally. Expect the floor to be higher on 4x4 and larger groups. This is an editorial note on what is typical, not a filter, and not a promise about the car you are looking at.

The band the standard Omani terms are written around, usually with no age surcharge. What remains is normally about the licence rather than the driver: one to two years held since issue, plus an International Driving Permit alongside a visitor's home licence.

A handful of suppliers set an upper age limit or ask for extra paperwork above it. It is uncommon but it exists, and it is far cheaper to read the age line before paying than to discover it at the airport.

The hold ceiling filters on real deposit figures from the live Muscat list. Card type and driver age are not in that data, so the two rows beside it are editorial notes on what is typical in Oman rather than filters, and nothing on this page is a guarantee that a particular supplier will accept a particular card. The terms attached to the car and the instructions on your voucher are what the counter will act on.

Muscat cars that block nothing on your card

Four moves, in the order they happen

  1. Choose

Set the hold you can absorb above, then look at the kilometre allowance on the same card before you look at the price. In Muscat that is the order that saves money.

  2. Read

Open the terms attached to the car and find three lines: the card line, the age line and the mileage line. Those three decide almost every dispute that happens at an Omani desk.

  3. Carry

Home licence plus International Driving Permit if you are visiting, Omani licence if you are resident, passport or residence card, the booking voucher, and the card the booking was made with.

  4. Collect

Photograph the car in daylight at the handover, including the windscreen and the lower sills, and check the fuel gauge against the paperwork before you leave the bay.

Three situations, three sets of paperwork

Oman treats a visitor, a resident and a Gulf neighbour differently, and the rental terms follow suit. Find yourself here before you book, because this is the part no amount of deposit flexibility will fix at the counter.

Visiting on a tourist entry

Normally asked for
Your home licence and an International Driving Permit together, plus the passport the entry was issued against.
Where to get the permit
From the motoring authority in your own country before you travel. It is a translation of your licence and has no value without the licence beside it.
Easy to get wrong
Arriving with a licence in a non Latin script and no permit. The desk is reading a document it cannot verify, and that is where handovers stall.

Living here on a residence card

Normally asked for
An Omani driving licence rather than the licence you arrived with, together with the residence card itself.
Why it differs
Once residency is granted, the permission to drive on a foreign licence generally stops applying, and rental terms are written to match.
Easy to get wrong
Booking on a tourist basis while holding residency. The price is the same, but the documents the desk expects are not.

Driving in from the GCC

Normally asked for
A GCC licence is commonly accepted as issued, with no permit required alongside it.
Worth checking
Whether the rate allows the car to leave Oman. Many do not, and a cross border permission is a separate product.
Easy to get wrong
Assuming your own insurance travels with you. Cover is written for the country the car is hired in.

What each band costs you in choice

Hold In the live window Who it suits Worth checking
No hold at all 35 of the first 100 cars Debit card holders, anyone near a card limit, and travellers who simply do not want money frozen while they are away from home. Zero hold is not zero liability. Read the damage excess and what the included cover actually waives before you treat it as free.
Up to a 150 euro hold 66 of the first 100 cars Anyone who can spare a small block for a week. Two thirds of the window is already inside this mark, so the choice barely narrows. Small holds are often paired with a tighter kilometre cap. Read the two lines together, not one after the other.
Up to a 300 euro hold 89 of the first 100 cars Almost everyone with a credit card. At this point the hold has stopped shaping your shortlist at all. The hold is released after the car is returned, not at the moment it is returned. Allow several working days on an international card.
Anything on offer All 100, because the heaviest hold in the window is 400 euro Drivers choosing on car and kilometres rather than on money blocked, which in this city is the sensible way round. There is no high deposit tier here to avoid. The figure that varies most between two similar cars is the daily kilometre allowance.

Counts are taken from the first hundred cars the widget fetches for Muscat and they move with your dates. The figure on each car in the grid above is the one that counts.

Cards, licences and age in Oman

A credit card in the main driver's name is the norm here and it is what most suppliers write their terms around. It is not the only route. Thirty five of the first hundred cars in the live window place no hold at all, and a car that blocks nothing is the dependable option when a credit card is not available. Whether a specific supplier will accept a specific debit card is their decision and we cannot promise it on their behalf.
For a visitor driving on a short stay it is normally expected alongside the home licence, and it is cheap and quick to obtain from your own motoring authority before you travel. A resident holding an Omani residence card is normally expected to hold an Omani licence instead. GCC licences are commonly accepted as issued. Treat this as the usual pattern rather than a rule that covers every supplier, and read the licence line shown with the car.
Commonly somewhere between 21 and 25, and it moves with the class of car. Smaller cars tend to sit at the lower end and larger 4x4 groups at the higher end. Where a younger driver is accepted there is often a daily young driver charge collected at the counter rather than included in the online price.
The kilometre allowance. Only nine of the first hundred cars in the live window offer unlimited kilometres, which is the tightest we see anywhere, and Muscat is a city where ordinary days out are long. A return run to Nizwa or along the coast toward Sur eats an allowance quickly. Set the hold you need on this page, then read the mileage page before you book.
The supplier releases it after the car is returned and inspected, and your own bank then takes its own time to clear the release. On an international card several working days is ordinary. If you need the money available immediately after your trip, a zero deposit rate avoids the wait rather than shortening it.
Usually yes, and the second driver has to satisfy the same age and licence conditions as the first, including the International Driving Permit if they are visiting. Add them at the counter so they appear on the agreement, because a driver who is not named on it is generally not covered.

Clear the card question, then book

Muscat Car Hire shows the hold, the kilometre allowance and the cancellation terms against every Muscat car before you pay, so nothing on this page has to be taken on trust at the counter.
